Night Sky

I have been thinking about what walk we will do next. There are so many to choose from in Tasmania. I have wanted to do one that was close to home, and had been thinking of a walk that I could get some nice photos.

As I was driving home one cold night this week, I noticed that once it got dark there were not many people out walking. I am guessing for comfort and safety we avoid walking alone in the dark and it is not always easy to get out and about with a young family. However it is a whole new world when the sun goes down.

Luckily for me, I live in a small community and feel totally safe at night. So I kissed my children and wife goodnight, grabbed my camera and went to a popular, day time, walking track. I am not sure if it was my feeling safe, my haste to get out the door, or my own forgetfulness that caused me to forget a torch. I could not believe it, and it was DARK. Another reason I had chosen this night as I new that there was little to no moon and that meant great star gazing.

I didn't walk far before I found myself set up and playing with my camera. I managed to capture a couple of nice shots before the cloud came rolling in and I called it quits. This is one of my favourites.

The following night it was a little clearer, so I walked to the top of the hill where I would be away from the street lights and set up to take some pictures of the stars. The stars and the heavens have always amazed me, even as a little kid. One of the fondest memories I have about star gazing was the first night I went out and looked at the stars after receiving my first pair of glasses. I could not believe that the stars were small pin pricks in the sky and not big fuzzy dots. As my eyes have deteriorated over the years the stars now look like exploded fireworks without my glasses on. Then I was introduced to cameras.

This opened up a whole new world of star gazing for me as a teen. Now I am an adult I have embraced digital cameras and the amazing things that you can do with an entry level camera and google photos.

Thanks to this passion combined with technology, I can share this passion with you.

I was so thrilled with these, that I wanted to take some more tonight. The only thing was, the weather was against me tonight. We are expecting the coldest temperatures Tasmania has seen in decades. I was enjoying the warmth of home, so I decided to see what shots I could get from my front door. I was pleasantly surprised. The street lights added their own dimension to the pictures.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I have done.

This was taken looking back at our front door. How often we forget how amazing the sky above us is.

The photo below is a personal favourite despite the little reflection on the lens.
